- Fish and Chips
Lab-on-a-chip technology is one tool for fighting seafood substitution
An increasing number of recalls and cases involving adulteration of products such as infant formula, peanuts, and salami have eroded consumer confidence and put product fraud in the media spotlight. According to a study by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and the GMA Science and Education Foundation, food product fraud may cost the food industry $10 to $15 billion per year. The melamine contamination of milk products, which cost the industry $10 billion and affected almost 300,000 consumers around the world, illustrated the global market consequences of product fraud.

- Michigan Turkey Producers Wins Food Quality Award
Investments improved quality, nearly eliminated pathogen growth
"Dedicated employees producing quality products." This statement, printed on the back of Michigan Turkey Producers employees' T-shirts, represents the company's core beliefs and culture. It is because of these "dedicated employees" and "quality products," as well as several important investments, that Michigan Turkey Producers, a supplier of raw and ready-to-eat turkey products, is the 2009 Food Quality Award recipient.

- ATP Bioluminescence Moves Mainstream
Fast, simple test has helped keep food manufacturing clean
Adenosine triphosphate—ATP—is an energy molecule stored in all microorganisms and therefore an indicator of life. That fact did not escape the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which has long been studying the use of ATP bioluminescence, a reaction similar to the naturally occurring glow of a firefly’s tail, as a way to detect the bioburden on a spacecraft or to search for intelligent life on other planets.

- Toxilogical Safety of Irradiated Foods
Irradiation has already been approved by a number of countries
Generation of cancers in animals requires the mutation or deletion of oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes, resulting in a loss of heterozygosity at those allele locations. Mutation (point mutations or frame-shift mutations) and deletion of genes can be induced by exposure of cells to genotoxic chemicals or can occur naturally as part of the cellular DNA repair and replication process.

- Raw Poultry Prime Suspect in L. monocytogenes Outbreaks
Contamination detected by testing a newly built plant
Researchers at the Agricultural Research Service and the University of Georgia have identified the primary source of Listeria monocytogenes contamination in commercial chicken cooking plants: incoming raw poultry.

- Thermo Opens Global Food Safety Response Center in Germany
Center will develop methods to detect chemical contaminants in food
Just one pest can have an impact on your business, but an infestation can cripple your facility's reputation. Food safety auditors take pest control seriously, with pest management accounting for up to 20% of some third-party audit scores.
